WeSwap Card- Best Foreign Currency Exchange

On a recent trip to Gdansk in Poland I opted to trial the WeSwap Money Card, a commission free way to take currency abroad.

You order the card from the WeSwap website who then conduct the usual identity checks, mine where completed online and via email with little to no hassle involved. You then receive your card in the post a few days later; this is very much used like a debit card.

After you have downloaded the mobile app the next stage of the process is to load your card with your money, transfer this from your debit card to the WeSwap card using the WeSwap mobile app compatible with Android and IOS. Once your card is loaded you now have a few options to swap currency the quicker you want your money exchanged, the worse the exchange rate. Plan to swap money a week before you travel to get the BEST EXCHANGE RATE ON THE MARKET.

How it works? Well you’re actually swapping currency with other travellers going in the other direction. So if you are travelling to Spain you’d in theory be swapping with someone Spanish visiting England. This peer-peer swapping cuts out the middle man the Bureau de Change and keeps commission rates at zero. This is all organized by WeSwap and happens “behind scenes”. You are never made aware of whom you have swapped with.

The Pros:

  • Easy to use and swap and load currency

  • Free to use as a debit card in the currency of your choice no charges for in store purchases

  • No charges to withdraw money in your destination (as long as your currency is swapped)

  • Safe and secure way to take travel money

  • Mastercard so is widely accepted

The Cons:

  • Only 18 Currencies available

  • Need to wait up to a week for the best Exchange rates

  • Charges on withdrawals in other currencies

  • Charges on withdrawals under £300

How did I find the card?

The card is very convenient with an easy to use app and swap feature, we actually ran out of currency on the card whilst away. We were able to re-load whilst away with not the best exchange rate but still as good as the post office and without the fees banks charge with foreign withdrawals. We paid on the card in restaurants, cafes and bars and kept track of money via the app.

Paying on card provided many benefits, little attempt to try and understand the various coins which come with a foreign currency, which always tend to weigh my trousers down to my ankles. Safety was another feature knowing if my card was lost it could be cancelled and my money was safe. Have to say the best feature is the great currency exchange rate which I found to be the best on the market, compared to using the Post Office I managed to get an extra £30 of currency after changing £800, which = lots of Vodka in Poland!

Follow the link below and check out the WeSwap card yourself, any questions let me know.
